Asian Language Corner Program

Since the fall of 2022, AICH has initiated Asian Language Corner program which includes Chinese, Japanese and Korean language Corner sessions and related cultural events.

The Chinese Corner

The Chinese Corner program focuses on Chinese language practice meetings at St. Matthews Library and supporting Chinese Club activities in eight local K-12 schools. In addition, we hosted bilingual special events, such as “the Mooncake Workshop & Tea Tasting,” “Traditional Chinese Dance,” and “Mahjong Lessons,” designed to engage individuals not actively learning Chinese. This Chinese Corner program achieved a milestone by creating and hosting the first-ever Competition of Chinese Textual Recitation in the greater Louisville region.

The Japanese Corner

The Japanese Corner program also hosts language practice meetings as well as cultural events, such as “Japanese Fisherman Dance” and “Japanese Origami”. The Japanese language meetings at St. Matthews Library gained high recognition from learners and attracted many native Japanese speakers to volunteer, resulting in an average of 30 participants attending each meeting. These gatherings serve as an excellent platform for cultural exchange, fostering meaningful interactions among individuals from diverse cultural backgrounds.

The Korean Corner

In the fall of 2023 AICH introduced Korean Language and Culture alongside Japanese and Chinese language meetings and cultural events. The successful launch of the ‘Exploring Korean Language and Culture through Food Event Series’ marked a significant addition. This event series aims to integrate language and cultural learning by exploring Korean culture through hands-on cooking experiences. The instructor, Jenny Oh, originally from North Korea, is deeply passionate about giving back to her new home country.
